Doctor Bird Awards “Unsung Heroes” 2004 |
Presented in recognition of their body of work and
outstanding contribution to the Jamaican Film and Television Industry |

For many people the Jamaica Information Service was a crucible for innovative Jamaican programming. One person who helped to create that image is the stalwart of television production in Jamaica for over four decades- Freddy Borough - who has received many accolades including: A Bronze Musgrave medal, a Centenary Award and a Press Association Award. His work in radio, theatre and television makes him a part of a unique group of multi-faceted, writer/producer/director/trainers. Freddy is also an actor. |
- ORVILLE CEDRIC "O.C." POWELL:
Most filmmakers know that the “film” is made in the cutting room and many producers/directors owe their success to the editing skills of “O.C.” Powell. After repeated stints of study in television production in Jamaica, the USA, Canada and Japan, he took up a variety of posts at CPTC, Apex Productions, JBC, CVM-TV) and TVJ, while lecturing in non-linear editing at CARIMAC, UWI. The 25 years of extensive background in editing, graphics, directing and training has made him unique in the industry. |
This man who has led Phase Three Productions for over 20 years also answers to the name “Pardy”. He and his company have served the film and television industry by providing a wide range of services and training. In particular, his provision of quality Outside Broadcast and production services for film and video has made his company invaluable to many leading industry entities at home and abroad. His triumph over many personal and professional challenges together with his legendary generosity singles him and his company out for special recognition. |

- TONY "TEEROB/DADDY OH" ROBINSON:
In his 34 years in the industry, “Teerob” has become one of our highest rated film director/ producers. He has written, directed and produced many tele-dramas, while working with some of the best Jamaican playwrights and actors. He has also produced several television musical specials with many of the legends of Jamaican music – leading to his pioneering work in music video production. His proven abilities earned him the director’s role on several international sporting events. Teerob has had on-camera experience, performing stunts on many feature films. |
.

- HOPETON GILBERT FULLWOOD:
In a career that spans 33 years, he has left his mark as an editor as well as in the area of training. His vast experience has been used to nurture several current professionals. Having honed his skills at the Jamaica Information Service (JIS), he went into a partnership known as Vidquip Limited, which provides invaluable service to the film community. In advertising, documentaries and docudramas, he has been an industry leader creating innovative and seminal works which have withstood the test of time. |
.

- JAMAICA INFORMATION SERVICE:
The Film Unit of the Jamaica Information Service (JIS), to a great extent, was the true birthplace of the Jamaican film and television industry. Under visionary filmmaker, Martin Rennals (a 1998 Lifetime Achievement Doctor Bird Award Winner), the JIS created some of the best Jamaican documentary and dramatic works in film, while stockpiling an invaluable source of reference material on Jamaica’s history, culture and development. Most of Jamaica’s film experts in virtually all the creative and technical areas, started at the JIS, including the creator of the Doctor Bird Awards, Lennie Little-White, 2004 Awardees - Freddy Borough, Hopeton Fullwood and Tony Robinson, as well as 1998 DBA Awardees - Carey Robinson, Chappie St Juste and Don Buckner.
