This
expansion of the DBA 2000 involves the introduction of
the first Caribbean mini INPUT screenings and seminar
which is being staged in association with UNESCO. The
twin event brought local, regional and
international-based Caribbean film makers into a common forum
for exposure, discussion and possible marketing of their
products.
INPUT
is an international organisation of filmmakers (the generic and
inclusive use of all players in front of and behind the camera,
but especially for those behind the camera) who produce
primarily for television. The objective of INPUT is to
provide a forum for exposing and sharing innovative initiatives
in filmmaking.
Doctor
Bird Awards 2000 presented the first Caribbean mini
INPUT Screening and Seminar on November 4 and 5, 2000 at the Hilton Kingston Hotel - Kingston,
Jamaica W.I. This event will be staged on an annual basis. For

THE
SPIRIT OF INPUT
- INPUT
is about television, primarily public television.
- An INPUT
programme is not necessarily the "best" television
programme. There are no winners or losers. No Gold, Silver or Bronze medals
are awarded.
- INPUT
is about innovation, not for its own sake, but as a means of
discovering new and more effective ways of using the medium.
- INPUT
is about taking risks - pushing the medium of television
beyond the conventional and derivative.
- INPUT
is about spectacular failures and tremendous successes.
- INPUT
is consistent with the objectives of the medium: to
entertain, provoke, amuse, enlighten, enrich and educate.
- Ultimately,
INPUT programmes should force viewers to see issues
from a different point of view. They should also evoke
questions of "craft" or "execution".
Interested
in participating? You can, if you are a Caribbean
filmmaker. Works of
any length, type or form that fit the spirit of INPUT may
be submitted if they are:
- Innovative
in form or content: should take viewers to places/spaces
they haven't been before
- Original,
courageous and/or experimental: in form, content and subject
matter
- Unusual
or controversial
- Good
in the use of professional skills (whether well tested or
new): Editing, camera, sound, narration, acting etc
- Adventurous
in the use of new technologies: animation, computers,
digital
- Provocative:
Challenges accepted norms and status quo
- Able
to break new ground in how the medium of television is used
- Able
to expresses a Caribbean aesthetic: distinct Caribbean
"sense and sensibilities" in terms of plot, characters, treatment
and/or style
